World Disaster Day: Disasters claim 50 lives in Kano

Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA ) has recorded 54 deaths and 81 injured from January 2020 to date as a result of a series of disasters in the state.

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Kano State Alhaji Sale Jili Rimin Gado confirm this at a news conference organised by the agency to commemorate the world disasters day in Kano.

Solacebase reports that United Nations general assembly set aside 13th October annually to celebrate world disaster day to promote a global culture of disaster risk management.

The theme of this year World disaster day 2020: good disaster risk governance.

Alhaji Sale Jili Rimin Gado said Kano state government is in Sympathy with the families of those who lost their loved ones as a result of a disaster, rather than to celebrate the day.

He said from January 2020 to date, as a result of disasters such as flood, windstorms, fire outbreak about 30,356 houses were completely destroyed, and 9,127 farmlands also affected.

He then cautioned residents against blockage of waterways and dumping refuses in drainages as they all contribute to flooding.
