Adhere To NUC Guidelines Or Face Sanctions, FG Warns Private Universities

Federal Government has warned private universities to strictly adhere to the National University Commission (NUC) guidelines or faced appropriate sanctions.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu gave the warning at the presentation of provisional license to the newly approved Kano Based Skyline University, Nigeria, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Adamu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Arch. Sunday Echono said government appreciates the courage of private universities proprietors to partner with it.

“While government appreciates the courage of the proprietors to partner with it on a project of this nature, which is not expected to be for profit particularly at the commencement, it will not tolerate any breach of the condition of the approval.

“Any unwholesome practice or operation outside the provision of NUC guidelines is unacceptable and will attract appropriate sanctions”. He said.

He urged the newly approved Kano-Based Skyline University to tackle the challenges of running the university in accordance with the spirit and condition of the approval.

He also urged them to ensure that admission of students is carried out through the joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Speaking earlier, the Executive Secretary of National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, said the commission has been engaged in the rigorous processing of several applications to ensure that the requirements and the quality assurance mechanism are strictly adhered to.

 

According to him, the Skyline University has been under consideration since 2015 and had gone through stringent assessments leading to the final approval by the Federal Executive Council.

 

He said the country has 42 Federal, 47 state and 75 private universities, making a total of 164 universities.

 

But he said that the current number of universities is inadequate to meet with the nation’s annual demand of access to university education.

 

He emphasized on the continue efforts in direction of establishing more universities for enhanced access to university education system in the country
