ASUU Threatens Strike At KUST Wudil, Over Poor Funding

Academic Staff Union of Universities has expressed dismay over what it described as persistent underfunding of Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

The union said that Kano State Government has left the provision of the needed infrastructure of the university to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday jointly signed by ASUU-KUST branch Chairman, Comrade Muhammad Sani Gaya and Secretary Comrade Murtala Muhammad and obtained by Solacebase after the union’s meeting held on January,28^th.

According to the statement, the union said the poor  funding of the university is adversely affecting the running of the university resulting to inadequate offices and laboratories especially in newly established departments and poor condition of students’ hostels’

It decried the plan to increase the registration fees for undergraduate students despite lack of accountability in the funds generated in previous students’ registration exercise as externally audited financial reports were not presented before the university council over the years.

It noted that this violates the university law and services.

Also in the statement, the union questioned an alleged bogus expenditure such as the recent purchase of exotic vehicles for principal officers of the university at over N200m, when the Dangote female hostel in the university which was gutted by fire since February 5^th 2019 is begging for renovation.

It expressed displeasure over the nonpayment of staff entitlement some of which have lingered since 2009/2010.

It then threatens that if the funding is not improved and settlement of all outstanding claims of staff on or before March 7^th,2020, it would embark on strike.
