BUK inaugurates skills acquisition centre for students

Bayero University, Kano BUK Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas on Thursday launched a modern skills acquisition centre at the Students Affairs Deanery with the aim of training students to learn tailoring and make-up in order to become self-reliant after graduation.

Solacebase reports that Professor Sagir Abbas  said the initiative is part of his promises to enhance and improve the welfare of students in the university.

The Vice Chancellor said the idea is to help the students to acquire the modern skills that would enable them with something to make a living before getting jobs after graduation.

He said if taken more seriously, it would be a veritable source of revenue and job creation since government can no longer provides adequate employment to the teeming youth.

“Today is another significant milestone for me as the University is witnessing another gigantic stride to improve the welfare of students through skills acquisition platform. This has come barely two months after the University launched a job scheme that employed 125 students to serve as part-time workers,” the Vice Chancellor stressed. He said, already, the students have started enjoying their wages, adding that based on assessment, they are working efficiently,’’ the Vice Chancellor said.

He enjoined the beneficiaries to utilize the facilities provided judiciously and use their time efficiently to learn so that after graduation they would remember the University for providing education and entrepreneurship skills.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the Management would continue to explore many other avenues and opportunities to strengthen the welfare of students. He commended the Dean, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar for establishing the centre and for exemplifying his leadership qualities that are centred on improvement of welfare to students.

In a remark, the Dean, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for initiating such laudable projects, noting that the VC’s penchant for welfare would forever be appreciated.

He said the beneficiary students would learn tailoring, hair dress, make-up and head tie, saying that the idea is to expand the skills to many students. The Dean noted that many students from the Old Campus had earlier benefitted with the skills acquisition programme conducted by the Deanery.

The Deputy Dean, Female, Dr. Maryam Liman tasked the students to make maximum utilization of the facilities to learn various skills, noting that it would be a life- time treasure for them.
