COVID-19: Dilapidated Kano State Isolation Center

Contrary to the statements being peddled by  Kano state government on its preparedness to contain the outbreak of dreaded coronavirus, the state is operating a dilapidated and only isolation centre in the state.

The state government has expressed its preparedness to fight the dreaded disease in the event it hit the state, but, checks revealed otherwise as there is only one isolation centre for the over 15 million people of the state.

The isolation centre located at Yargaya village in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of the state lacks basic necessary equipment and structure to treat patients who contract coronavirus.

However, a visit to the centre by a team of journalists on Wednesday to confirm the level of preparedness of the government, Prime Time News observed that there are only 8 rooms, equipped with 4 beds only, making the total of 32 beds to cater for the millions of people in the state.

Observation had shown that the centre, established in 2014 following the outbreak of Ebola disease, has no ventilator, basic equipment to provide enough oxygen for a patient of coronavirus, the disease that causes difficulty in breathing.

Another essential infrastructure that is missing at the centre is power supply, as there was no electricity in the compound when Journalists visited the place, just as the taps were not running.

Similarly, there is no functional vehicle in the center, as the only ambulance sighted in front of the building had been grounded.

The building itself is untidy and unkempt, as there were some few deliveries made three days earlier that include Smart Signs Mini Pulse, Oxygen Concentrator and ten pillows.

The government on several occasions had stated that it had spent millions of naira to upgrade the place, but the visit conducted by journalists led to a contrary view.

When contacted for comment, the state Commissioner of Health, Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, could not speak to the team of journalists that met him at Abdullahi Wase Hospital.

He told the journalists that he was in a hurry to meet the deputy governor of the state at the government house for a meeting, believed to be over the coronavirus pandemic.

Also, Solacebase placed several calls to the Health Commissioner, but he did not pick his calls.

The state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje recently inaugurated a taskforce committee on the Covid-19, headed by his deputy, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna to contain the outbreak of the disease.
