Dahiru Yahaya: The demise of an erudite historian-Yusuf Umar Madugu
I first met Prof. Dahiru Yahaya when I was an undergraduate student in 2002, during an orientation program organised by the Students’ Historical Society of Nigeria BUK chapter.
The program was held at the famous SUG Secretariat, New Campus. I still recall with nostalgia when Prof. Yahaya was discussing the paper presented by Prof. I.K Abdussalam on the “Role of History in the Nation Building”. Prof Yahaya took his time to elucidate more on the relevance of History not just to the nation-building but rather to humanity and human existence.
He further reiterated the position Prof Abdussalam that losing History is like losing a memory. There’s no way you can know who you are unless you know where you came from. As such, there is a need to develop historical consciousness so as to raise fundamental questions such as why, when, and how things happened and the consequences of their happenings.
That is to say that for every action, there must be an equal or opposite reaction(s) to it. He also talked about the rise and fall of nations which he said was a cyclical process as stated by Ibn Khaldun. According to Prof. Yahaya, change is bound to happen, but failure to learn from the lessons of the past (History) exposes his human folly. Prof. Yahaya’s philosophical allusions would always become sources of inspiration to many of his students who were opportune to listen and interact with him.

He concluded by appreciating Prof Abdussalam for such a wonderful presentation and said “I expect nothing less or short of what you presented because I know the commitment of lecturers in the Department to scholarship”.
He then pointed at other lecturers who attended the occasion and said: “look at them (referring to our teachers then), they are the best out of the best and that is why they are here”. His comments had inspired us to work hard and dream to achieve the best in whatever we do.
In fact, he instilled in me the courage, zeal passion and commitment to the historical scholarship as well as determination to be among the best. Since then I look up to him as a role model.
Coincidentally, when I enrolled for my Master’s Program in 2008, I and my colleague, Dr Kabiru Isa, were assigned to Prof Yahaya as his supervisee. I was contemplating on how I could approach him being the teacher of my teachers and assessor of many professors.
After summoning courage, I met and introduced myself to him. Surprisingly, when I greeted him like I always used to say ‘Allah ya taimaki babban Farfesa’ and then he replied the way he used to call me ‘Madugu Uban Tafiya’. Prof. realised I wasn’t much comfortable or appeared to be awesome, he said to me calm down Madugu and let’s get started.
Since then Prof. treated me like his own son. I had the privilege of meeting him both at the office and in his home anytime I needed to see him.
The scholarship of Prof. Yahaya knew no boundary. He excelled in his chosen field and left a lasting scholarly legacy that would ever memorialize his worthy life. In recognition of his outstanding intellectual contributions, in 2010 BUK organised an international conference in honour and to celebrate his 40 years of service to the University.
I felt I was duty-bound to participate actively, therefore, it was the first time for me to partake in such kind of intellectual engagement.
When I registered for my PhD at ABU, Zaria in 2012, Prof. Dahiru Yahaya was serving as a Visiting Professor and occupant of the late Dr. Yusuf Bala Usman Professorial Chair founded by Katsina state government. Before he applied for the post, I had the privilege of compiling a bibliographical list of all the theses and dissertations he supervised as well as his publications. When I heard that the application was successful, I was very happy to be part of the process by giving my little contribution.
Even after his retirement from BUK in 2018, Prof Yahaya continued to play a fatherly role to me.
I was sad and shocked when I received the news of the death of Prof. Yahaya on Wednesday 03/01/21. However, I quickly said Innalillahi wa Innailaihi rajiun, what a colossal loss. May his gentle soul rest in Jannah. May Allah SWT in his infinite mercy give the family, the Department of History, BUK, the University and the general public the fortitude to bear the irreparable lost. Ameen.
