Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) on Tuesday revealed that the volume of consistent ethnic tension through comments and remarks of Nigerians on social media has increased.
CITAD said out of the 205 hate speeches tracked in December, 69 instances which represent 34% were ethnic-based.
Solacebase reports that the Center conducts the hate speech tracking monthly.
Addressing newsmen during a monthly press briefing held at CITAD headquarters in Kano, the Coordinator countering hate speech project Malam Hamza Ibrahim stated that with support from National Democratic Institute (NDI) under CITAD countering hate speech project in Nigeria has revealed that, the outcome had shown how intolerant people of different ethnic groups and linguistic affiliation are becoming stressing that, there is a need for something to be done to address the issue before it escalated to something else.
“A country as diverse as Nigeria shouldn’t underestimate the power of tolerance decay and ought to, therefore, put measures in place to ensure sustainable mutual coexistence among people no matter the difference in tribe, religion or language,” he said.
The coordinator also urged traditional institutions in the country to enlighten, promote and emphasize tolerance and strongly discourage hate speech in all forms on social media and any other platform.
