FEC approves national poverty reduction strategy
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS) put together by the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC).
President Muhammadu Buhari Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced this to State House Correspondents on Wednesday.
Adesina said the Steering Committee on NPRGS would be headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who will provide overall guidance for implementation.
The Council, he said also noted the Federal Government’s promise to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty and observed that June 12 would make two years since the promise was made.
He said the council concludes that the effort is a work in progress and the government stands by its promise and will play its own part until the expiration of the tenure of the current administration.
“The President had directed the Secretary to Government of the Federation and the Chairman, Presidential Economic Advisory Council to come up with a sustainable poverty reduction strategy and that is what is codified in this document that was passed today,” he added.
The presidential spokesman said the council also approved the implementation of the Strategy and its incorporation into the Medium-Term National Development Plan 2021-2025 and the Agenda 2050.
Adesina also noted that FEC directed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to prepare a bill for submission to National Assembly, to make the implementation of the strategy sustainable.
