The Federal Government in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are to support 1,500 Rice Farmers in 10 selected states with farm inputs.
Mohammed Sabo-Nanono, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, disclosed this while flagging off the distribution of the inputs to 150 beneficiaries on Thursday in Katsina.
Sabo-Nanono, represented by the State’s Director of the ministry, Alhaji Suleiman Mohammed, said the gesture was to boost various interventions initiated by the ministry.
“The aim of distributing these inputs is to alleviate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and flood on farmers in order to increase rice production in the country.

“The aim of the intervention was also to enhance food security and to increase farmers’ income nationwide.
“In this intervention, each rice farmer is to get the complete inputs to cultivate one hectare of farmland during this wet season,” he explained.
“And among the 150 beneficiaries here in Katsina State, 50 are female rice farmers.
“Farmers are requested to make judicious use of the inputs so as to encourage the government to do more,” the minister said.
Shehu Musa, the representative of the Japan Agency, said the inputs include; hybrid seeds, NPK and Urea fertilizer, soil amender, pre/post-emergence herbicides.
Musa urged officials of both the federal and state governments to provide extension services to the beneficiaries and monitor their activities during the production period.

“There should be no report of diversion or sale of the inputs because the government has put a mechanism in place to monitor and deal decisively with any farmer who diverts or sell the items.” He warned.
Alhaji Sa’idu Adamu, the Managing Director, Katsina State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KATARDA), commended the federal government for its various interventions in the state.
Also responding, the State Chairman of Small Scale Women Farmers Association, Hajiya Binta Dalhatu said that women in the state were contributing their quotas in food production.
According to her, “before we were receiving such interventions as a loan, but we have to commend the federal government for giving us free of charge this time around.”
