Free Electricity Meters : KEDCO target over 1m consumers as first phase commences

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has commenced the distribution of free electricity meters on Friday with the target of getting across to one million consumers in the first phase.

The free meters distribution, according to the KEDCO Managing Director Dr Jamilu Isyaku said, this was in fulfilment of federal government’s promise to ensure mass metering in the country and in the process put an end to the problems of estimated billing in the electricity sector.

Solacebase reports that the first official flag-off of the distribution of the free electricity meters was inaugurated at Hausawa Quarters, Tarauni local government, Kano state.

Dr Jamilu Isyaku represented by Chief Operation officer of Kano electricity distribution Company,Mr Vijay Kumar Sonawane, said under the Presidential Metering Initiative, the government committed to the bulk procurement and distribution of 6.5 million meters, which would be distributed to electricity consumers across the 11 power distribution companies (DisCos).

He explained that KEDCO received over 87 thousand meters to distribute to its Customers at the first phase.

He also warned against illegal connection and other economic sabotage in its franchise area as increasing cases of illegal connection, meter bypass, transformer oil theft and vandalism of any kinds are threats to the safety of the general public.
