Kano Sponsored Foreign Students Lament Govt. Failure To Offset Tuition Fees

Kano state government sponsored students in foreign higher institutions have sent a save our soul message to the state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje over their deplorable living condition which is begging for urgent attention.

In an open letter sent to the governor jointly signed by President of Kano State Foreign Students Association Sadik Abdullahi Uba Jalli (Sudan), Vice President Saminu Suliaman Musa (India) and Public Relations Officer Muhammad Yusuf Musa (Egypt) said living in a foreign country without upkeep allowances for their feeding and accommodation have exposed them to great suffering and social vices.

It said most of them have to depend on other foreign classmates for some daily expenses.

The letter said students from Ahfad University have three years fees outstanding while students from India have 18 months outstanding upkeep allowances with 11 months accommodation fees.

It added that students from Sudan have 22 months outstanding upkeep allowances, 11 months accommodation fees while those in Sudan have 18 months upkeep allowances outstanding and resident permit renewal.

The students included a letter from Elrazi University, a private university located in Khartoum, Sudan and signed by the President of the University Ahmad O. Riziq addressed to Kano state scholarship Board notifying that Kano students have been suspended from attending classes from 15th October 2018 over failure.

It said failure to attend class for a month in the institution will affect student attendance and chances of graduating.

Reacting to this development in an interview with Solacebase, Executive Secretary, Kano State Scholarship Board, Prof. Fatima Umar who confirmed the situation said she was in discussion with the deputy governor Nasiru Gawuna on Tuesday over the issue and promised that the bills would soon be paid.

She noted that just last week the government paid about N538m being part payment of outstanding fees of the state students that graduated from 5 private Universities in Nigeria so that they can participate in the compulsory NYSC.

A reliable government source informed Solacebase that the total outstanding of fund to cater for the foreign students is about N2.9b.
