Three international youth teams have declared their interest to slug it out for honours alongside the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory in the 37th edition of Ramat Cup billed to hold in Kano in January 2019.
The competition, organised by the Youths Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) is scheduled for Kano from 11-19 January 2019, the President of the body, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna said on Sunday.
According to Gawuna, the participation of the three teams from Ghana and Niger Republic was to restore the international status of the competition.
The YSFON President, who is also the deputy governor of Kano State, said that remembering the heroic attributes of one of the greatest leaders in the country, late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, who stood in for justice and better wellbeing of the citizens, was one way the body can keep the memory in the minds of many Nigerians who were alive and those not born while he lived.
“There is no time, we as citizens of this great country will look back into our history and don’t remember late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, who was killed on February 13, 1976 in a bloody coup. He was one leader, we all miss him, so YSFON has continued to honour him with this competition for the past 37years and this edition with teams from our neighbouring countries in attendance will be filled with a lot of activities,” Gawuna said.
In a statement from the YSFON’s secretariat signed by the national secretary Patrick Okpavuerhe, the competition was moved from its usual February dates to January because of the incoming general elections in the country.
Okpavuerhe stated in a notice to all the expected States and the FCT, that the champions of the various states should be their representatives as a selected side from any of them will not be entertained.
He said they should complete their finals on January 5,2019 as the champions are expected to arrive the city on January 11 and the screening would hold the following day inside the Kano Pillars stadium, Sabon Geri.
