Minister advocates funding for correctional inmates’ food production

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has sought a partnership with the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NISAL) to secure funds for the engagement of inmates in farming activities.

Ojo said with the rising budgetary cost of feeding inmates, the Minister said NIRSAL should partner with the ministry to ensure that inmates produce their food.

A statement by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Ajibola Afonja, Tunji-Ojo spoke when the management of NIRSAL led by led by its Managing Director, Abbas Masanawa visited him in Abuja on Thursday.

It partly read, “The Minister, citing the relevance of the organization, said NIRSAL can do a lot of good to Nigeria Correctional Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. He added that with the rising budgetary cost of the feeding of inmates, he said NIRSAL can partner with the Interior Ministry to secure funds for the engagement of inmates in farming activities to produce their food.”

Speaking, Masanawa told the Minister that they came to seek a possible collaboration with the Ministry in its service.

He explained to the Minister that NIRSAL is a non-bank financial Institution wholly owned by the Central Bank of Nigeria to redefine dimension, measure, reprice, and share agribusiness-related credit risk in Nigeria.
