By Uzair Adam

The Correctional Centres in Kano are implementing programs to empower inmates, enabling them to support their families from within the confines of the facilities.

SC Musbahu Lawan, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Command, disclosed this on Monday in a statement sent to journalists.

Lawan said the city of Kano, renowned as the Centre of Commerce, offers ample opportunities for those equipped with marketable skills to earn a living.

Recognizing this, the Custodial Centres in Kano have engaged inmates in various vocational training programs and skill acquisition initiatives.

According to Lawan, these programs have proved highly beneficial, with many inmates becoming productive members of society while still in custody.

Remarkably, a significant number of inmates are now able to financially support their families, covering expenses such as school fees, rent, and basic needs.

He added that the Nigerian Correctional Service Kano state command remains committed to its mission of empowering inmates through behavior modification and vocational training, aiming to facilitate their successful reintegration into society upon release.

To further support the reintegration process, discharged inmates receive aftercare materials from the Controller General of Corrections (CGC), ensuring a smoother transition back into the community.

Among the skills and trades offered within the Custodial Centres are the production of local hand fans (MUFICE), which has garnered considerable demand from both local and non-local patrons.

These hand fans, traditionally used for ceremonial occasions such as turbaning ceremonies, weddings, and naming ceremonies, attract customers from various parts of Kano and beyond.

The Command expresses gratitude to the people of Kano State and visitors who support the inmates by patronizing the products made within the Custodial Centres.

Likewise, inmates themselves express satisfaction with the opportunity to utilize the skills they have acquired during their time in custody.

Under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, inmates have access to formal and informal educational programs, as well as other empowerment initiatives, to facilitate their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
