PHOTOS: Low attendance, non-compliance to COVID-19 protocol characterize schools re-opening in Kano

After about one month of shut down of academic activities, students resumed on Monday in Kano with low attendance.

Also, most of the schools visited in the metropolis both private and public recorded low turnout of students

Our correspondent who visited some secondary and primary schoolS in Kano metropolis observed that majority of the schools did not go the extra miles of putting in place safety guidelines stipulated by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in schools.

Solacebase reports that on Sunday Kano confirmed 14 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections bringing the total active cases to 344 in the state.

The state Ministry of Health made this known via its verified Twitter handle @KNSMOH on Monday.

Solacebace reports that on December 16 2021, Kano State government directed the closure of both Public and private school although, no specific reasons was attached to the sudden notice, the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in Kano and the attack on Kankara school in Katsina state where about 333 students were abducted could be related to the government action.

A principal of one of the Schools at Zagon Makera, Kano Metropolis, Umar Baba expressed worries about the low attendance of the students as he chastised parents for not allowing their wards resume school, which he attributed to the rumours that the schools may not reopen on Monday.

He said discussions on a social platform with other stakeholders and feedback from his colleagues showed that about 50 per cent of pupils did not resume school.

On the non-compliance to COVID-19 guidelines protocols, Umar Baba said up to this morning we are still waiting for the state government to provide facemask, hand sanitiser for students and teachers, incidentally, we are yet to get any information with respect to that.
