Protest In Kano Before Release Of Zainab Aliyu

Group of students and civil society organizations on Tuesday stormed Saudi Arabian Consulate in Kano demanding the unconditional release of Zainab Aliyu allegedly accused with drug trafficking.

Miss Aliyu, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, was arrested over allegations that a luggage, bearing her name tag, contained the unlawful substance.

Addressing the gathering at Saudi Consulate in Kano a former president of Student Union Government of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Adnan Tudunwada appealed to Saudi Kingdom to release Ms Aliyu to continue with her studies.

Adnan Tudunwada called on Federal Government to punish all the airport officials accused of planting the drugs in Ms Aliyu’s luggage.

He however, lamented how officials at Saudi Consulate in Kano refused to attend to them and listen to their complaint.

“The government should punish the perpetrators of this evil act who are planting drugs in innocent people’s bags. They should be prosecuted and punish.

“I am really disturbed with how officials of Saudi Consulate refused to attend to us. We would continue demanding the release of Zainab Habibu Aliyu despite this non challant attitude of the authorities concerned,” Mr Tudunwada said.

Earlier, the group  visited Kano state government house where Secretary to state government Alhaji Usman Alhaji said Gov Abdullahi Ganduje has directed him to tell the protesters that federal government is doing its best to ensure the release of Ms Aliyu.

He said President Muhammad Buhari has directed Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Affairs Abike Dabiri-Erewa to ensure the release of Ms Aliyu.

The Secretary to the State Government assured that the perpetrators of this evil act would be brought to book to face the full wrath of the law.

Ms Aliyu had travelled from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in company of her mother, Maryam Aliyu, and sister, Hajara Aliyu last December when the ugly incidence happened.

On Monday Ms Dabiri-Erewa said President Muhammadu Buhari has directed Mr Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to immediately intervene in the case of Ms Aliyu.
