Though we are owing, we didn’t terminate foodstuff suppliers contract- Kano Govt insists

Kano State Government said it has commenced auditing of the debt owed food contractors in the state insisting that it never terminated their contract.

Solacebase had reported that the food contractors under the auspices of the Association of foodstuff suppliers to boarding schools in Kano decried non-payment of N1.3bn and termination of their contract.

They said they have an outstanding of 18 weeks with the government.

The State Commissioner for Education, Malam Muhammad Sanusi Kiru stated this in a chat with Solacebase on Monday.

Malam Muhammad Sanusi Kiru said the outstanding is presently been audited so as to ascertain the actual amount due for payment to the food contactors.

The commissioner, however, insisted that the food suppliers contract was never terminated as they wrote to the government that they cannot continue with the contract in a letter dated April 7^th, 2021 due to the outstanding.

‘’They addressed a letter to the Executive Secretary, Kano State Senior Secondary School Board and signed by the association secretary, Muhammad Mukhtar Ahmed stating that its members could not secure either cash or goods at the present level of indebtedness, ‘’said Kiru.

He noted that in the letter, they expressed apprehension considering the resumption of students and the Ramadan fast.

According to him,‘’ As a responsive government, you don’t expect us to just leave the situation like that and allow the students to resume without a proper arrangement for their feeding. Also, you don’t expect the government to just pay the debt without verifying and ascertain the actual outstanding. Hence we immediately created an alternative to feed the school children.
