Some traders on Thursday in Gwarzo town of Gwarzo local government area of Kano state barricaded the Gwarzo-Kano road for some hours in protest against an alleged plan by the local government council to relocate them to another place.
An eye witness told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that the aggrieved traders, who barricaded the Gwarzo-Kano road prevented many vehicles coming from opposite directions from moving to their respective destinations.
According to the eyewitness, the protesters also set bonfires along the road while chanting unprintable words and calling on the local authorities to shelve the idea or face stiff resistance from the traders.
It was alleged that the local government council had directed the traders with makeshift shops around Tsaure filling station and Zenith Bank to leave the place as they would be allocated another place to display their wares pending when the local council constructed permanent shops for them.
“The directive did not go down well with some of the traders, hence their decision to protest against it,” the eyewitness said.
He said it was the quick intervention of some policemen in the town that prevented the situation from degenerating into something else as the traders had vowed to remain on the road until the council chairman comes.
“It was the policemen who came to the area that pleaded with the traders to leave the road and the traders agreed to leave the place,” the eyewitness said.
It was learnt that the traders later went to the district head and the Emir of Karaye where they called on them to intervene.
However, all efforts to contact the Gwarzo Local Government chairman, Alhaji Bashir Abdullahi-Kutama proved abortive as he refused to pick up the several phone calls put through to him by a NAN correspondent.
Similarly, the local government chairman did not reply to the text message sent to his mobile phone as at the time of filing this report. (NAN)
