The inability of the first prosecutors witness one Ibrahim Dabo to provide a comprehensive report of his committee that investigated the affairs of Katsina state local government council in 2015 has led to the adjournment of the trial of former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shema.
Dabo, who retired in 2004 as an Auditor-General could not provide needed answers which prompted the prosecution counsel of EFCC, Lateef Fagbemi SAN to seek for another date to enable the said report be made available.
His request was however not objected by the defence and Shema’s counsel, Joseph Daudu SAN.
Thus, the presiding judge, Justice Maikaita Bako therefore adjourned the matter to 30th and 31st May, 2018.
At the resumed sitting of the court on Tuesday, Shema who was docked alongside three others namely, Sani Hamisu Makana, Lawal Ahmad Safana and Ibrahim Lawal Dankaba have all pleaded not guilty to the 24-count charge levelled against them by the EFCC for alleged financial misappropriation of the state’s local government funds amounting to N11billion.
The trials commenced after a long judicial battle was held under tight security as combined security personnel from Department of State Security (DSS), Police and Civil Defence are mounting guards within and surrounding the court premises.
All roads leading to the state High Court have been barricaded with vehicles being turn backwards. Commuters and residence of the area have to trek long distances amidst security questioning to get access to their places.
It will be recalled that the EFCC had since February 21, 2017 dragged the former governor and three others before the court on charges bordering on criminal breach of trust, fraud, conspiracy and forgery.
