National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) currently enrolled about 420,000 students in various fields of study and having the highest number of students in tertiary institutions in the country.
The university is said to be examining 145,000 students also across its study centres.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdallah Uba Adamu stated this while speaking with Solacebase in Kano.
Prof. Abdallah Uba Adamu said students at its study centres are more than the students in about five universities put together , noting that NOUN does not require UTME for admission hence most students use the opportunity provided by open Distance Learning ODL in NOUN to acquire knowledge and further their studies.
“When most students write JAMB for three to four times without success due to limited capacity and infrastructure of the institutions , they quickly utilize the window provided by NOUN and get admitted with the same qualification requirement,”
“Also since my assumption of office in 2016 we have expanded most of our study centres to cater for increasing number of students of the university,”.
“ Our Lagos centre has over 30,000 students while Benin centre in Edo state has 31,000 students and Kano presently has about 5,000. This is much than three or four university students population,” said Prof. Abdallah Adamu.
Speaking on the university not allowed running Law program; the Vice Chancellor said the issue is almost being addressed as the both Chambers of the National Assembly Committees on Education are harmonizing their decision after they were convinced that NOUN can successfully run a Law program.
“You see the Body of Benchers and Council of Legal Education said Law program cannot be run on part time basis, hence they will not recognize Law program of NOUN. However they initially did not understand the concept of Open Distance Learning (ODL) which NOUN education is all about as they thought it is a part program that the university runs,”
