Group petitions IG over killing of two youths in Kano by Police

Kungiyar Matasan Kano Advocacy Organisation has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu over the alleged police killing of two youths at Sharada quarters of Municipal council, in Kano state last Saturday.

The group demanded a thorough investigation into the killing, prosecution of the police personnel involved, payment of compensation to the family and a public apology for the wrongdoing.

The Organisation in a petition letter jointly signed by Kano Municipal Chapter Coordinator and Secretary, Nafiu Kofar Mata and Shuaibu Sani Abubakar respectively and sent to Solacebase, threatened to sue the police authority if these demands are not met over the killing of the youths by police.

The letter copied the emir of Kano, the state governor, the DSS director and Commissioner of Police accused the Anti-Daba unit of the Police Force of extrajudicial killing of two youths, Abubakar Isah (Banupe) and Ibrahim Suleiman (mainasara)  at Sharada quarters on Saturday.

Kungiyar Matasan Kano Advocacy Organisation said in the petition that, according to eyewitnesses account of the incident, at about 10.00 pm on Saturday, the police anti daba unit were at tea spot, called ‘’Indomie Spot’’ run by Ibrahim Suleiman (mainasara) , under the pretext of arresting a suspect.

Solacebase recalls that the Kano Police Command said the alleged officers have been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.

Although they are used to terrorizing the people in such manner so that they can give bribe for them to be in peace, said the petition.

‘’Then Ibrahim Suleiman (mainasara) asked the police personnel the offence of the suspect, as they storm the place like gangsters but an argument ensued and one of the police officer, Ado, stabbed Ibrahim Suleiman twice,’’ the petition said.

According to the eyewitnesses, while others were rushing to save the life of Ibrahim Suleiman, another police officer shot and killed Abubakar Isah (Banupe) instantly.

‘’They were all rushed to Murtala Muhammad Hospital where Abubakar Isah (Banupe) was confirmed dead and efforts were on to save Ibrahim Suleiman (mainasara) with blood transfusion but could not survive as the doctor confirmed he was dead.’’

‘’From all indication, this is a clear case of murder especially with the evidence and witnesses Account, It’s in view of the above mentioned that we seek the indulgence of the Inspector General of police under the able leadership of IG Mohammed Adamu to swiftly investigate this gruesome act of the few bad eggs who are all out to destroy the hard-earned name and reputation of the police especially that of Kano command who have put more effort these days in the promotion of friendly policing as the best strategy in engaging the people in matters of security,’’ said the petition.

‘’We must commend the Commissioner of police Kano Command for his timely efforts in addressing the aftermath of this incident in which the Youths intended to protest against this gruesome killing of innocent people by the police and our timely intervention have equally calmed the nerves of the people and put them in line to our philosophy of ensuring sustainable peace.’’

‘’It’s in view of the above mentioned, therefore, we call on the Inspector General of police to order a thorough and timely investigation of these police officers and ensure that compensation is paid to the families of the victims and apology widely circulated. This will greatly help in calming the people’s anger down who housed the hypothesis that justice will be done and will be allowed to prevail, failure of which will leave us with no other option than to seek redress in a competent court of law in the enforcement of their fundamental human rights abused by the Nigeria police force.’’
