Rainfall destroys FG Palliatives in Kano

The Federal government food items that include rice, maize and Millette among others sent to Kano state government as palliatives weeks ago has been left to rotten at an open space of the state agricultural company after being beaten by the rain.

About two weeks ago, the Federal government through the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq delivered 110 trucks of food items to the state with the aim for the items to be distributed to less privileges due to government lockdown order over COVID-19 and cushion the effect.

Solacebase reports that the food items include 1,380 metric tons of millet with 5,318 metric tons of rice; 2,438 metric tons of maize; and 900 metric tons of Sorghum.

However, the relief items valued at millions of naira are still left abandoned at the open space of a warehouse of Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) situated at Farm centre in the metropolis without provision to protect same from damage.

Incidentally, the food items have been beaten by three consecutive rainfall without any efforts to salvage the palliatives from been totally destroyed.

Meanwhile several bags of the grains, right now are soaked by the rainfall.

During a visit to the KASCO premises where the food items are kept, a source lamented to Solacebase how the items were left unattended to.

According to him, ‘’Íts so sad that the Federal Government sent these food items to alleviate the suffering of the masses in Kano due to the lockdown over COVID-19 which is biting hard on the people of the state but look at how nobody is concern with the plight of the poor and this food are just wasting away

However reacting to the development, Chairman of Kano State Fundraising Committee Professor Mohammed Yahuza Bello said that plan for the evacuation and distribution of the Federal government palliatives is scheduled to start on Thursday.

Professor Yahuza Bello who is the Vice-Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, said the committee is constraint by logistics from government, noting that the issue is been attended to.

Solacebase recalled that Kano state government recently completed the first phase of distribution of its palliatives donated by corporate organisations and individuals to 50,000 households  across the 484 political wards in the 44 local government areas of the state.
