BUK Launches Human Resource For Health Learning Hub
The Bayero University Kano Centre for Gender Studies, in collaboration with Woman for Health, has launched a Human Resource Health learning hub, to provide skilled labour to hospitals especially in the North.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Centre was established in 2015, which has three units namely: Training, Knowledge and Research transfer.
The Director of the Centre, Prof. Hassana Sani, while addressing stakeholders in Kano, on Thursday, said it was working with other centres and departments in the university and globally in teaching, research and training of students as well as members of the society on issues related to gender.

According to her, “the major objective is to create a partnership with government, NGOs, faith-based organisations and development partners for promoting gender equity and accountability.”
Dr Fatima Adamu, the National Programme Manager, Women for Health, said that the programme was to address the serious shortage of health workers in Northern Nigeria.
” The biggest challenge facing health is the skilled labour, that will provide service to hospitals especially in the North.
” The number of female health workers should be increased, address the problem because many women during delivery, prefer fellow women to attend to them.”
Adamu further explained that the World Health Organization (WHO), has set a requirement that in developing countries, a population of 100,000 should have 55 doctors, 173 nurse and midwives.
She added that Kano State has a population of 13 million and by the WHO requirements, the state should have 22,623 nurses and midwives.
“Currently Kano has 2,409 nurses and midwives, a shortage of over 20,000; it is very common when one goes to the hospital and the one to take delivery is not qualified.”
On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Muhammad Yahuza, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Prof. Adamu Garko, said the project would ensure gender balance and access to health services.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented by Jarman Kano, Prof. Isa Hashim, commended the Women for Health and urged them to put in more effort. (NAN)
